Customs classification
The Harmonised System
- All trade products are classified by names and numbers into internationally standardised systems
- This leads to a tariff nomenclature
- The most used/basis is the Harmonised System which classifies products into product families
- These are split into 21 sections, and 96 chapters
- From most basic raw material, to more complex items
The Harmonised System
- At the base of most Customs codes used in the world – 6 digits
- The first 2 digits correspond to the Chapter
- The next 2 to the Heading
- Then 2 for the Subheading

Customs classification - CN & TARIC
- The EEC created a further set in the Combined Nomenclature or CN which contains 8 digits
- The list is further expanded into the Taric + 2 digits + 3 or more additional digits
- TARif Intégré Communautaire
- These codes allow proper labelling, declaring, tracking of goods imported
- The first 6 digits correspond to the HS code.
- Digits 7 & 8 are the CN subheading
- Digits 9 & 10 are the TARIC subheading
- There may be up to 4 additional codes under the TARIC

There are many ways of finding the corresponding code/nomenclature for a product, two are suggested below
